Grundlagen: Büro & Dativ

In the article series “Grundlagen”, I’ll show you the basics of German. Suitable for beginners (A0-A1). You’ll find exercises at the end of the article.

In this post I introduce Dativ, which is one of the cases the German language has. To practice this, we will look at a couple of words to describe your office and especially your desk.

Dativ: dem / der / dem 📝

Nouns can occur in different cases, the German language has the Nominativ, Genitiv, Dativ and Akkusativ. All of them are used to express various situations. It can depend on the verb or preposition which case you would have to use.

To introduce you to the Dativ we will look at a situation where it is needed: to describe a place or location of an object.

"Der Stuhl steht vor dem Schreibtisch."

"dem Schreibtisch" describes the place or location of "der Stuhl" so in this case we have to use the Dativ and that's why you don't say "der Schreibtisch" but "dem Schreibtisch". You see that the only change is in the article (for now 😉 ).

💡 This is how the articles do change:

• der → dem

• die → der

• das → dem

It will work similar with ein and eine, but we won't have a look at it for now.

Mein Schreibtisch 👩‍💼👨‍💼🗃

To describe this picture below we will have to use a couple of prepositions and as we will talk about positions we will practice the Dativ as well:

• Das Notizbuch liegt rechts neben dem Radiergummi.

• Das Handy liegt links neben der Brille.

• Die Notitzzettel liegen neben dem Notizbuch.

• Die Lampe steht links neben dem Radiergummi.

The words we use to describe the position are

• stehen

• liegen

• hängen

The difference between stehen and liegen lies in the detail: Does the bigger part of the object touch the floor? Then you use liegen. For example: "Das Handy liegt auf dem Schreibtisch." If the smaller part of the object touches the floor, you use stehen: "Die Lampe steht auf dem Schreibtisch".
